Curry’s are a complex set of dishes stemming from India but can be found in many Southeast Asian Countries. Different Regions and cultures have varying flavors of Curry. This post is a story about a very specific dish one I like to call Curry The Other Beef Stew.
This is a Japanese Curry. Japan is a country in East Asia Curry was introduced sometime in the late 1800’s by the British who then ruled India. Curry in a little over 100 years has become one of the favorite dishes of the Japanese people.
Curry The Other Beef Stew
30 Years or so ago my sister moved to Japan for a year. When she returned home she brought with her a golden Curry delight. It actually comes in a golden box and has a name befitting the description golden curry sauce mix.
S&B Golden Curry Sauce was a miracle in a box. It made cooking curry easy and perfect every time. I love the rich flavors blended together in a creamy perfectly spiced way. You can serve it over rice or noodles but I Personally enjoy eating it exactly as you would beef stew. Hence Curry:The Other Beef Stew title.
Lets Talk about Curry
Have you ever had it? If you have eaten Indian Food you have probably had curry in some form or another. It is a little sweet and a little spicy. You can get real burn your mouth hot and spicy curry if you so choose. I prefer not to have that hot of curry. I want to taste the other flavors that are in the dish.
Curry is complex and has a ton of uses. Just Google it… no don’t!! you will just get a bunch of information on Stephen Curry the basketball player. Just take my word for it

Curried Eggs 2 ways
Hardboiled eggs done as Deviled Eggs Appetizer and made into Egg Salad.
- Curry Powder
- Sour Cream
Depending on how many eggs you want to use the ingredients will change. I used 6 eggs and for the Deviled eggs used the yolks plus 1 Tablespoon mayo and 1 tablespoon sour cream plus 2 teaspoons of mild curry powder.
For 6 eggs for egg salad I do 3 tablespoons of mayo and 2 tablespoons sour cream with 1.5 Tablespoons Curry Powder.
Let sit at least an hour before you serve, the additional time gives the layers of spice time to blend .
Play with it, how creamy and spicy do you like it? I like my Deviled eggs drier than I like my egg salad. I cannot stress enough to you that cooking has to be done according to your tastes. I know that flies in the face of all cookbooks and most folks on TV. I want you to become comfortable in the kitchen and tailor what I make to your tastes.
There is only one exception to this rule. Baking follow the recipe its scientific and will not turn out if you do not follow the science. After the baking is done do as you please. Add cheese to your apple pie, hot sauce to your corn bread.

I love beef stew especially at this time of year. Yes I will eat chili its the standard cold outside let me make a pot of something good food, but I prefer Beef Stew. When my sister introduced me to the Golden Curry it became a yearly fall pilgrimage to every Asian/Indian store in what ever town I resided in to find this box of perfection.
What made me more happy is that I could fill the pot with carrots and potatoes and have a wildly flavorful Beef stew that was unlike any other.
30 years later you can find S&B Golden Curry in some grocery stores and there is always Good Old Amazon to get you thru if you can’t find at the local grocery or if you are like me and just like to order from Amazon. You can get it in mild(my preference) Medium and Hot. Try them all find your level of comfort on your taste buds.
This is so silly and you will not hear this often from me but read the box and follow the recipe. It is flawless. I use a whole box adding carrots, potatoes and stew beef cubes. Fill pot and cover with water. Make it how you want. Add Onions or chicken or shrimp. Instead of water use broth or add some coconut milk. Serve over rice or noodles. Do whatever you want but just make sure you eat it!!
